State legislator’s bill would scrap ‘personal beliefs’ as legal reason to not vaccinate children

OLYMPIA, Wash. (AP) — A Washington state lawmaker has introduced a bill that would not allow personal beliefs to be a sufficient reason to not vaccinate a child.

Rep. June Robinson, D-Everett, introduced the bill Wednesday, the same day California lawmakers introduced a measure that would require all school children to be vaccinated unless a child’s health is in danger.

Washington currently allows vaccination exemptions for medical, personal or religious beliefs. Robinson’s bill would remove the personal belief exemption.

The move comes amid a measles outbreak that has sickened more than 100 people across the U.S., including cases in Washington, and in Mexico. No deaths have been reported.

National immunization data from 2013 show 71 percent of Washington children between 19 and 35 months old have received all of their shots on time.

I have done my research, she is implying that we as parents don’t research our decisions. I even had to sign something from my doctor stating I had done my research. This is just another way the government is going to take my right away as a parent. I already can’t discipline my child the way I need to. Pretty soon we are not going to have any rights as parents at all!

Public safety rules and dictating invasive medical care are two different things entirely. AND MIND YOU, I am not against vaccination. I am just against forced vaccination of every kind. No one has the right to dictate medical care for anyone at anytime in a democracy. This is insane. I voluntarily vaccinated and you vaccinate your kids and then we don’t have any worries over who doesn’t–simple as that. That way, we can mind our own business. This is from the CDC website: During January 1–August 24, 2013, a total of 159 cases were reported to CDC from 16 states and New York City. Patients ranged in age from 0 days to 61 years; 18 (11%) were aged <12 months, 40 (25%) were aged 1–4 years, 58 (36%) were aged 5–19 years, and 43 (27%) were aged ≥20 years. Among the 159 cases, 17 (11%) persons required hospitalization, including four patients diagnosed with pneumonia. NO DEATHS were reported. This is ALSO from the CDC: In 2013, 35,663 (81.1%) of the 43,982 PRESCRIPTION drug overdose deaths in the United States were unintentional. You sound like you want to holler for a cause and YOU PICK MEASLES, really?????????????????

Jennhess2, How right you are! I would highly recommend you do a google search for the article, “How vaccine hysteria could spark totalitarian nightmare”. I’d post the link but I’ve seen posts not get posted before because of links in the post. Here’s some quotes from the article that I think you’ll appreciate:
“1. The voices shrieking to forcibly vaccinate people are the same voices shrieking to support a woman’s right to choose abortion under Roe v. Wade. If a woman’s body is sacrosanct, if she has the right to choose to deliver a child or not, if she has total authority over her body, how can she not have the right to accept or refuse a vaccination?
      2. Medical ethics are clear: No one should be forced to undergo a medical treatment without informed consent and without their agreement to the treatment. We condemn the forced sterilization of the ’20s and ’30s, the Tuskegee medical experiments infecting black inmates and the Nazi medicine that included involuntary “Euthanasia,” experimentation and sterilization. How can we force vaccination without consent? Vaccination is a medical treatment with risks including death. It is totally antithetical to all ethics in medicine to mandate that risk to others.
      3. Science is never “concluded.” Mr. Obama and other ideologues may think the truth is finalized (“The science is indisputable”), but the reality is our understanding of disease and treatment are constantly being updated. Just like Newton’s mechanical paradigm of the universe was supplanted by Einsteinian physics, and physicists today modify that view, medical “truth” is not the truth for long. In an attempt to quantify change in medicine, years ago a cardiology journal discussed “The Half-life of Truth.” cardiologists looked back in their journal at 20-year-old articles to see how much of what was believed then was still believed to be true. The answer? 50 percent. So in cardiology, at least – and in all of medicine to greater or lesser degree – only half of what we believe now will still be true in 20 or so years. The last word on vaccination is not in. It hasn’t even begun to be written.
      4. If you believe absolutely in the benefit and protective value of vaccination, why does it matter what others do? Or don’t do? If you believe you need vaccination to be healthy and protected, then by all means vaccinate your child and yourself. Why should you even be concerned what your neighbor chooses to do for his child – if vaccination works? The idea of herd immunity is still based on the idea that in individual cases vaccines actually are protective.
      5. If you think the government has the right to forcibly vaccinate people – for the good of society – what is to prevent them from forcibly sterilizing people, or forcibly euthanizing people, or forcibly implanting a tracking device – for the good of society? You make think those examples are extreme (although two-thirds have happened), but the principle is the same. You are allowing government to have ultimate authority over your body.
nested case-control study within the General Practice Research Database (GPRD) in the United Kingdom, patients who had a first MS (Multiple Sclerosis) diagnosis recorded were compared with controls. The authors concluded that immunization with the recombinant hepatitis B vaccine is associated with a threefold increased risk of developing MS (Hernan et al., 2004). No increased risk of MS was associated with other vaccines, which included tetanus and influenza vaccinations.
      5. In 1982 William Torch, a prolific researcher and publisher on Neurologic topics, presented a paper (later published) at the American Academy of Neurology reviewing SIDS deaths. He reported that in 100 consecutive cases, 70 percent of SIDS deaths occurred within three weeks of pertussis vaccination. In very convincing confirmation, a Japanese prefecture stopped vaccinating after associating SIDS with the pertussis vaccine. It is worth reading the entire description from Viera Scheibner, PhD:
In 1975, about 37 Crib Sudden Deaths were linked to vaccination in Japan. Doctors in one prefecture boycotted vaccinations, and refused to vaccinate. The Japanese government paid attention and stopped vaccinating children below the age of 2 years. When immunization was delayed until a child was 24 months of age, Sudden Infant Death cases and claims for vaccine related deaths disappeared. Japan zoomed from a high 17th place in infant mortality rate to the lowest infant mortality rate in the world when they stopped vaccinating. Japan didn’t vaccinate any children below the age of 2 years between 1975 and 1988, for 13 years. But then in 1988, Japanese parents were given the choice to start vaccinating anywhere between 3 months and 48 months. The Ministry study group studied 2,720 SIDS cases occurring between 1980 and 1992 and they established that their very low SIDS rate quadrupled.
      6. A mail survey was done of 635 children in the Netherlands in 2004. German measles and whooping cough (pertussis) were twice as common in unvaccinated children. However, throat inflammations, ear infections, rheumatologic complaints, seizures and febrile convulsions were much more common in the vaccinated group. Aggressive behavioral episodes were eight times more frequent in vaccinated children, and sleep disordered more often. Tonsils were removed in 33 percent of children who had been vaccinated vs. 7.3 percent unvaccinated.
      7. In 1947, the first reports of brain inflammation and chronic brain damage, including death, after pertussis vaccination began to be published (Brody, 1947; Byers and Moll, 1948, Low, 1955, Berg, 1958; Strom, 1960, 1967; Dick, 1967, 1974; Kuhlenkampff, 1974; Stewart, 1977, 1979). But it took more than 40 years of collective evidence before academic medicine decided it was true –1981 National Childhood Encephalopathy Study (NCES) and in 1991 and 1994 by the Institute of Medicine, National Academy of Sciences.
In 1991, after reviewing vaccine safety, the Institute of Medicine admitted, “In the course of its review, the committee encountered many gaps and limitations in knowledge bearing directly or indirectly on the safety of vaccines. These include inadequate understanding of the biologic mechanisms underlying adverse events following natural infection or immunization, insufficient or inconsistent information from case reports and case series, inadequate size or length of followup of many population based epidemiologic studies [and] few experimental studies published in relation to the number of epidemiologic studies published.””

    • Dan Welch

No, you haven’t. If you had, you would be vaccinating. The science on this is OVERWHELMINGLY CLEAR: vaccines are safe and effective.

Your “research” consisted of googling “vaccine injury” and stopping at the first link that told you want you wanted to hear. It doesn’t count.

It really sickens me how you anti-vax idiots are constantly bleating about “your” rights. What about the rights of your children? You are putting them at danger with your nutbar beliefs and your insane narcissism that tells you that somehow, you know better than hundreds of years of accumulated medical knowledge, not to mention hundreds of thousands of doctors just in the US, and millions of them worldwide.

  • yup

Vaccinations are for the health of the group over the health of one child. Yes, vaccines are a danger to their health. Most kids won’t be harmed but what about the one or two who are? Most already get the vaccines. The outbreak, as they slipped and told you, is due to mexicans… of course.

    • jango

And the diseases are so much worse and so much more likely to cause harm. You are a fool if you think vaccines are more dangerous. I feel sorry for your children. I hope your poor choices don’t end up costing them their lives.

  • BD4

You guys are selfish idiots. You base your “informed” decisions on faulty information. Remember Jenny McCarthy’s big stink a few years back about vaccinations causing autism? Totally debunked. And the outbreak is “due to Mexicans”??? Are you just imcompetent or naturally dumb? The article says nothing of the sort. Vaccinate your kids for the good of the public health. You are putting others lives at risk more than you are your kids.

    • RainMom

Cochan collaboration- the holy grail of reviews, says safety data on MMR vaccines is definitely lacking. …AUTHORS’ CONCLUSIONS: The design and reporting of safety outcomes in MMR vaccine studies, both pre- and post-marketing, are largely inadequate. The evidence of adverse events following immunisation with the MMR vaccine cannot be separated from its role in preventing the target diseases.

  • Jody

If you are SO concerned about whether my child is vaccinated, what does that say about your faith in the vaccination your child already had? Isn’t protection the whole point? *Know far to many mothers with Autistic child who were ‘normal’ prior to vaccines

  • Brenda Ryan

Whwn my daughter was little she had her first required polio vaccine – she developed a fever over 106 degrees and almost died from it. I had to keep her in a cold water bath so she wouldn’t get brain damage. No one has the right to force any form of drug on yourself or your child. I think vaccines do a lot of good but if you have a valid – including religious – reason to not get them that is your right. They only infect the other people who don’t get vaccines, which a chance you have to take when you don’t get them.

  • Kathy

“Whether you’re pro-vaccine, anti-vaccine, or fall somewhere in the middle, the questions you need to ask yourselves are as follows:

Do you want to live in a world, where you cannot freely refuse a medical procedure that carries risk of injury or death? I’m not questioning your comfort level with today’s vaccine schedule, because today’s vaccine schedule will change. New vaccines and additional doses are added all the time. children today receive as many as 49 doses of 14 vaccines before they reach age six, which is roughly 12 times higher than the number of vaccines administered to children back in 1940. With more than 220 new vaccines in the developmental pipeline for children and adults…and no end in sight..the question you must ask yourself is ARE YOU CERTAIN you will be 100% comfortable with vaccines that are added to the mandated list in the future? If you say that yes, you’re comfortable, then you’re either a) not expecting to be a parent or grandparent, b) don’t have to worry about it because your kids are grown and out of the house, or c) lying to prove a point. No critical thinker, no honest person, would ever sign off on the sight-unseen vaccine schedule of the future. And yet that’s what you’re doing when you condemn the people who are fighting for your right to refuse. YOU have the right to refuse, should you ever choose to use it, because the very “anti-vaccine” people you demonize have been fighting for us all.
Right now, the burden of “herd immunity” falls on small children, but that is changing. Vaccine manufacturers see an untapped market in adult vaccines and are coming for you next. What will you do if your state, your employer, or your insurance company forces you to get a vaccine that you simply don’t want? It hasn’t happened to you yet, but if the right to refuse is eroded, it will happen to you sooner than you might think. Who then will you turn to? Your legislators who get campaign donations from pharmaceutical companies? The CDC that has former pharma executives sitting on the board? Who will you turn to if you ever want to say no? There will be no one.
Once we enter the slippery slope of removing and individual’s right to refuse medical procedures that carry a risk of injury or death, once we remove an individual’s right to speak for him/herself and his/her children, we open ourselves up to an insidious new era, where other drugs and other procedures can be mandated. I heard (on NPR, interestingly enough) that there are people who want to test for a gene marker that’s been found in mass shooters in the hopes that they can put the carriers of that gene on medications in early childhood. Sounds great, right? But many of us carry genes that will never be expressed. You could be a carrier of that gene. Or your child could be a carrier. So if we follow the “for the greater good” mentality behind vaccines (or the Nazi’s “for the greater good” mentality behind eugenics (breeding out illness), we are looking at forcing people who may never express a sociopathic gene to take antipsychotics, just in case. Because that’s what forced vaccination does. It asks children who may never come into contact with a particular virus to accept a vaccine just in case. And that’s what eugenics was all about. It sterilizes people who can pass on a genetic disease just in case. Forced vaccination is a human rights violation, and to support it when you know that the government’s own Vaccine Adverse Events Reporting System exists and lists people who have died as a result of vaccines is unethical at best, sociopathic at worst.
The ethical thing to do is to allow people their right to refuse and leave it up to doctors and big pharma (who have marketing budgets larger than the GDP of some countries) to do a better job of convincing parents that vaccines are safe. We can start by reversing the law that grants vaccine manufacturers total immunity from vaccine injury lawsuits. Because as it stands, you can’t sue a vaccine manufacturer if your child is injured or killed by a vaccine, even in cases where they could’ve made a safer vaccine and chose not to or when they failed to recall a contaminated lot# in a timely manner. Think about that. You can’t sue the manufacturer. That immunity from liability does more to shake parents’ confidence in vaccines than anything else out there.” Author unkown. It is getting shared all over on other site and felt it brought some insight maybe not thought about.

Kathy, Thank you for writing such a great post. I’m planning on copying it and filing it in my vaccine folder. Thank you again for taking the time to write it.

  • Dr. Exasperated

Such a pity that we have to legislate logical choices. It is frequently said that one “…doesn’t need a license to have a kid.”

Well clearly the principle continues to be relevant. Whatever the reasons quoted by anti-vaxxers, they are exercising their right to choose (as a surrogate decision maker- they aren’t choosing their own fate but someone else’s).

So, the issue really comes down to personal choice (as a surrogate, so not really personal) versus social responsibility. They are clearly choosing to spare their own child from a perceived danger while actually exposing those same children to real risks and at the same time exposing other vulnerable people to real risks. This seems socially irresponsible to me.

This is the best scenario. We are making the assumption that the parents are acting as a benevolent surrogate decision maker. As yet few have addressed other possibilities for their motivation, including fear, paranoia, distrust of the medical profession and psychiatric/behavioral disorders (Munchhausen Syndrome by proxy).

Why don’t we do the right thing and just vaccinate our children? Drop the charade and crazy talk, be a responsible parent and citizen, and vaccinate your kids.

  • DK

The constant assault on our Constitutional and God given Rights is not going to stop unless “We the People” stop it!
Whether you believe in getting vaccinated or not that is your right do not let them keep raping our freedom!

    • alice smith

DK, You hit the nail on the head. No matter what side of the vaccine issue one is on, the matter boils down to freedom and does the government have any Constitutional authority over our children or our own bodies… IT DOES NOT! What amazes me out of these pro vaccine people is they can’t seem to see any further than the nose on the end of their face in that once the government usurps their authority over our physical bodies, or that of our children, it’s a short plank walk for them to decided to do anything to our bodies. What’s to stop the government from mandating that certain segments of our population be sterilized or euthanized? No different than any tyrannical dictatorship in history. Another funny aspect from the pro forcibly vaccination crowd is if they were so confident in their vaccines, then why are they so worried about those that haven’t been vaccinated????? It’s illogical, but then so is most mob voices. Mobs, typically, have no logic. Another interesting tidbit is that I’ve read studies of the demographics of those that vaccinate versus the non vaccinated populations. These studies that I’ve read have been from educational pro vaccine sources, BTW. What I’ve seen is it’s the lower educated, and lower income populations that have the highest rate of vaccination. The higher educated, and higher income have a higher rate of non vaccinations. Ever wonder why so many nurses refuse to be vaccinated????

So, perhaps, these name calling, pro forcibly vaccinate folks, have a lower level of education? Maybe that’s why they don’t understand research and their only source of incoming information is the boob tube??? Just a thought.

    • Dan Welch

No one is “forcing” you to be vaccinated, snowflake, though why someone would have to be “forced” to get one of the greatest medical advances in history is truly mystifying. But regardless, the bill only says, unvaccinated children cannot attend public schools.
Given how paranoid and conspiracy-happy you anti-vaxers are, I would think you’d be thrilled to take your kids out of school. After all, at a public school, they might get taught something that approaches reality.

  • Jamie

Three things concern me. If the health of our children is sincerely the objective of such articles, why don’t the media outlets ever include two facts as a reminder to help children who may contract the measles:
    1) recommendation of vitamin A supplementation (cod liver oil is inexpensive and effective) and vitamin C (not processed juices, but whole foods or good quality supplements) since both are proven to reduce the severity of measles symptoms. As early as 1932 doctors used cod-liver oil to reduce hospital mortality by 58%, but then antibiotics became the treatment of fashion, (Clin. Infect. Dis., Sept. 1994, pg 493) and vitamin A was ignored until 1980. A 1993 study showed that 72% of hospitalised measles cases in America are vitamin A deficient, and the worse the deficiency the worse the complications and higher the death rate. (Pediatric Nursing, Sept./Oct. 96.)

    2) Include the fact that live vaccines shed and may contribute to the rate of infection to the public. Both John’s Hopkins and St. Jude’s (and any other reputable cancer center) recommend the immunocompromised to avoid the recently vaccinated for this very reason- to reduce the odds of becoming inadvertently infected

“Avoid live virus vaccines and people who have received one
Some vaccines are made from live viruses. Currently, these include oral polio, smallpox, MMR (measles, mumps, and rubella), and nasal flu vaccines.
These vaccines may pose a threat to your child’s health. Any person with a weakened immune system, including patients with cancer or HIV infection should not receive live virus vaccines.
Do not allow people to visit your child if:
    • They have received oral polio or smallpox vaccines within 4 weeks;
    • They have received the nasal flu vaccine within one (1) week; or
They have rashes after receiving the chickenpox (varicella) vaccine or MMR (measles, mumps, rubella) vaccine.”

    3) Over the past 30 years, there have been similar numbers of measles cases reported in various areas of the United States. Studies published in leading medical journals, such as the New England Journal of Medicine, American Journal of Epidemiology, American Journal of Public Health and others around the world have confirmed small numbers, 75-140 cases of measles annually. So why then is the latest statistic of over 90 cases of measles spread over 14 states, representing tens of millions of people being billed as an *epidemic*?

    • alice smith

Jamie, you brought up some really good points! Another area where the media is negligent in reporting is the campaign contributions, from big pharma, and other companies that stand to profit, to those legislators sponsoring these bills trying to force vaccinations. For example, for Rep. Paul Harris, that’s on the House Health Care and Wellness Committee that will be voting on this bill, the following have contributed to his campaign funds: Amgen Inc State PCA, CareMark RX Inc, Community Health Network of WA,Mednax Inc, Merck Sharp and Dohme Corp, PhRMA, Pfizer, Glaxo Smith Kline, WA Hospital PAC, WA Family Medical PAC, WA Medical PAC, AztraZeneca, Cambia, Novartis, Our Patients Come First PAC, PhRMA, Takeda Pharmaceuticals, Abbott Labs Employee PAC, Eli Lilly & Co. If you go through the other 14 members of this committee it appears to me most have much the same for contributors, except for the 5 that voted against this bill. Sounds to me like this is unethical for these Reps to be voting on a bill where their contributors stand to profit should the bill be approved. It would appear that we have the best legislature that money can buy. So, why is our media negligent in reporting these easy to find connections. Could it be that the mainstream media doesn’t want to lose advertising dollars from big pharma?

  • Angela Bowery

Maybe the press should realize, to start, that those of us that do not vax do NOT listen to Jenny…EVER.
What we do is the following…..
We reseach medical journals from all over the world, read research papers from all over the world, we talk to drs against vaccines.
We question why places like the UK do NOT vaccinate for chicken pox any more or for whooping cough except in extreme cases.
We look at the logic of the arguement ‘we’ll all die of measles!’ when vaccines have been here for 100 or so years and measles did NOT kill the human race in the last 10,000 years.
We question why 1 in 40 kids is autistic, 1 in 6 has developemental abnormalities. We talk to parents of children injured by vaccines, recognized by the courts, the gov’t and the drs. (knowing fully that vaccines only do NOT CAUSE autism but is a big contributor).
We question why drug companies can NOT be sued for vaccine injuries.
We question how forgien courts can find vaccines dangerous but it’s not reported in the USA.
We question how big companies can be charged AND CONVICTED od falsifying test results of efficacy and safety YET NO ONE REPORTS IT IN THE USA.
We question why they tell us to get a vaccine for the flu that is only 12% effective and does not contain the strain that is killing people.
We read and read and read.
We research and research and research.
We ask questions drs can’t answer about vaccines.
We question why children are getting more and more doses of vaccines (whooping cough) yet we are having breakouts like never reported before. We question herd immunity when people scream that outbreaks, in VACCINATED people, are caused by non vaxxers when the over all vaccination rate is 97.5%…..well over the herd immunity theory requirment. China is a great example, 99.8% vaccination rate for chicken pox BUT they have the biggest outbreak in their recorded medical history.
Why do drs have to be given bonuses and awards for giving more vaccines than the dr next door?
We question why if Dr.X says ‘everyone get a vaccination for disease W’ they are smart, educated, researched, well read and to be listened to YET when Dr A says ‘you should research and question vaccinations’ THAT dr is stupid, insane, unedeucated and should have their licence removed dispite having the same, often MORE, education than your average GP.
We question why something that is this great a product should have to made into a law that allows children to be taken if its not given but where vaccine injured children and their parents recieve virtually NO SUPPORT financially, socially or resource wise from the gov’t or community.

    • Dan Welch

In other words, you listen to the echo chamber that is the anti-vax community. And lie to yourself. You should be so proud. If you truly read medical journals — all of them, not just the ones that you think agree with you — you would run across literally hundreds of studies that address all the nonsense you just spilled out.
