Hurrarop! IKEA to introduce vegan meatballs

SWEDEN -- Fans of IKEA who aren't fans of meat now have a reason to celebrate. The company says it will roll out vegan meatballs starting this spring.

A British animal rights group had been pushing for the change. In a statement released to the group Viva!, the Swedish retail giant said that vegan meatballs would appear in-store starting in April, then later be available for take-home sales.

“IKEA wants to offer healthy food choices that are delicious, sustainable and affordable for the many people, based on the IKEA Swedish identity. IKEA Food is currently developing the food range to provide options that meet the many different preferences of our customers. One of the exciting new products is a Veggie ball which will be launched in our stores from April and onwards. The veggie ball does not have any animal content and is therefore also suitable for vegans.”

In the U.S., PETA had also campaigned for completely meatless, dairyless and eggless balls. About 25,000 people signed a petition for the move.
