PHOTOS: Hundreds turn out for Jayme Biendl Memorial 5K Walk/Run

MONROE, Wash. -- About 500 runners gathered at Sky River Park on a foggy Sunday morning in Monroe for the 4th Annual Jayme Biendl Memorial 5k Walk/Run.

The event raises money for the Behind the Badge Foundation and honors Biendl who worked as a correctional officer at the Monroe Correction Complex until she was murdered by an inmate in 2011.

Biendl’s father and Monroe Sgt. Brian Johnston addressed the crowd and helped kick off the 5K.  Several officers including Sgt. Eric Bunday from Hillsboro, Oregon Police ran the race in full uniform.

Ginger “Mama” Passarelli and the Soup Ladies fed the crowd a hot meal.

The Washington’s Most Wanted Charger was parked at the finish line along with several police vehicles.

Behind the Badge Foundation is a non-profit organization that provides support to Washington state’s law enforcement agencies, families and communities after an officer has died or suffered serious injury in the line of duty.
