USS Stennis leaving Puget Sound on latest deployment

INDIAN ISLAND, Wash. (AP) — The aircraft carrier USS John Stennis is leaving Puget Sound Monday on its latest deployment in the Pacific.

The first stop after leaving Bremerton is Naval Magazine Indian Island where the carrier picks of ordnance before leaving state waters.

The Stennis returned from its last mission supporting the war in Afghanistan in May 2013. It underwent a 16-month, $240 million overhaul at the Puget Sound Naval Shipyard. In December it trained with its air wing near San Diego for this deployment.

The nuclear-powered Stennis is 20 years old. It's 1,092 feet long with a 4.5-acre flight deck and can carry as many as 6,000 sailors and Marines.
