Mother arrested after deputies say she burned her 3-year-old with scalding coffee

TACOMA, Washington – A mother is under arrest after authorities say she poured scalding hot coffee over the head of her 3-year-old son.

Prosecutors say on Friday Genevra Rae Dines was yelling at her boyfriend over a bottle of water inside a home in the 12-thousand block of 264th St E in Graham.

The boyfriend allegedly told investigators he tried to get out of the room and take their toddler son with him, but the child stayed in the room with his mother.

That’s when the man says he saw Dines throw a cup of coffee on the floor and heard his son screaming.

Court documents say the boyfriend told deputies that he went into the other room and found his son’s hair was wet with coffee.

Medics were called and the child was rushed to Mary Bridge Children’s Hospital with first degree burns.

Prosecutors say Dines was recently released from jail after being accused of assaulting her boyfriend.

Authorities say Dines told them she had tripped and spilled the coffee.

“The defendant appeared to be under the influence of something,” wrote the prosecutor in court documents.
