New Year’s Eve celebrations have taken many shapes. Revelers took to the beaches of Brazil.
In the Arab Gulf emirate Dubai, 70,000 LED panels reflected colors and projected images on a massive skyscraper.
Despite bitter cold, a massive throng jammed Manhattan’s Times Square and nearby vantage points for New York’s traditional ball drop.
Instead of a crystal orb, other U.S. cities chose to use objects including a peach, chili, cowboy boot and giant walleye.
The mood was more somber than celebratory in Indonesia, where many are in mourning or hoping against hope for miraculous survivals from this week’s crash of AirAsia Flight 8501.
In China, the final moments of 2014 ended tragically in Shanghai. A witness says someone threw coupons that looked like dollars from a window, sparking a deadly stampede at a riverfront New Year’s Eve gathering.
