Man chasing after loose pet hit, killed by car

BELLINGHAM -- A 73-year-old former Blaine City Council member was hit and killed by a car when a dog he was walking broke free from its leash, and he chased after it.

A 86-year-old driver hit and killed Bruce Wolf around 4:45 p.m. Sunday on Semiahmoo Parkway in Blaine, the Washington State Patrol said.

The Bellingham Herald said Wolf was out walking his dog when it got loose and ran into the road. Wolf chased after the dog, and was hit by the woman's Lexus RX.

Wolf was taken to St. Joseph hospital where he was pronounced dead.

The driver was not injured in the crash, and police said she was not under the influence of alcohol or drugs. She was on her way to pick up a newspaper, the Bellingham Herald reported.

The Washington State Patrol is investigating the crash.
