BAINBRIDGE ISLAND, Wash. — Rescuers used levers to lift a car and extract a seriously injured 71-year-old woman who had become wedged under the vehicle after it had hit her and her 3-year-old grandson Friday afternoon, the fire department said.

The woman was airlifted to Harborview Medical Center in serious condition, Bainbridge Island Fire said. The grandson was less seriously injured and was taken to a local hospital for treatment.

The incident occurred in the parking lot of a condo complex on Harborview Drive Southeast, the fire department said.

The Washington State Patrol said a 91-year-old driver was backing his car out of his carport when he backed over the woman and knocked her grandson to the ground.

After the woman was wedged under the car, the fire department said, workers from a nearby construction project ran over and began putting heavy wood beams under the vehicle to try to raise it.

When Bainbridge firefighters arrived, she was still trapped and firefighters used levers to raise the vehicle and pull the woman out.
