Victim's son arrested after fire kills 81-year-old man in Oregon

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) — A sheriff's spokesman says the son of an 81-year-old man found dead after a fire in a Willamette Valley duplex has been arrested for investigation of second-degree manslaughter and reckless burning.

Mason County sheriff's Sgt. Chris Baldridge identified the victim as 81-year-old Candido Duran of the community of Jefferson, Oregon, about 10 miles northwest of Albany. Baldridge said Wednesday night that 36-year-old John Duran had been arrested. The younger man also lived in the unit.

Baldridge says the investigation determined that Candido Duran "died of injuries sustained during the fire."

The spokesman declined to say how the fire started early Wednesday or provide any other details.

The duplex was destroyed. The residents on the other side of the building were displaced but unhurt.
