Police increase patrols near elementary school as precaution after gunfire

SEATTLE -- Police have increased patrols around a Seattle elementary school after staff reported hearing gunfire early Wednesday.

Staff and students at Emerson Elementary in the 9600 block of 60th Avenue South briefly were told to shelter in place around 6:30 a.m. after gunshots were heard in the area, Seattle police said.

Witnesses told police they saw a gold vehicle -- with its alarm sounding and lights flashing -- and a second vehicle, possibly a Dodge, fleeing the scene.

Shell casings were found about a block from the school. No victims or damages were reported to police.

Police do not believe the school or students were targeted in the shooting, but decided to increase patrols as a precaution.

Officers continue to investigate the shooting.
