Overdue kayaker found by Coast Guard dies

SEATTLE (AP) — An overdue kayaker found unresponsive by the Coast Guard off Bainbridge Island has been declared dead at a Seattle hospital.

A Coast Guard spokeswoman, Petty Officer 3rd Class Katelyn Shearer, says a helicopter found the 52-year-old Kitsap County man in the water about 11:15 p.m. Sunday. His kayak was nearby.

She says Mark Gianneschi of Brownsville was unresponsive as he was flown to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle. A nursing supervisor says Monday that he died.

He had been reported overdue Sunday evening by his wife. She says he left the Brownsville marina about 2 p.m. Sunday and had planned to be home before dark.

It's unknown what went wrong. The Coast Guard says weather conditions were calm. The air temperature was 40 degrees and the water temperature 50 degrees.
