PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) — A 21-year-old man who shot and wounded a Portland police officer with an AR-15 rifle and killed the officer’s K-9 partner last April has been sentenced to 30 years in prison.

The Oregonian reports that Paul Alan Ropp pleaded guilty to attempted aggravated murder, assaulting a law enforcement animal and related counts in the shooting of Officer Jeffrey Dorn and his partner, Mick. Ropp was sentenced this week.

The former college student from The Dalles is the first of three people being sentenced for their roles in the April burglary, chase and shootout with police.

Court documents say Ropp and two other men burglarized a uniform and equipment store early on April 16 and fled in an SUV. The SUV later crashed during a police chase. Ropp took the rifle and ran. The other two stayed in the vehicle and were arrested.

Dorn has a new K-9 partner. He says Mick will always have a “deep, deep spot” in his heart.
