Chicago police under fire for blaring "Sweet Home Alabama" at protest

CHICAGO, Illinois -- Several Chicago police officers are under investigation for the song they blared from a patrol car during a recent protest march, reported WGN-TV.

Video shot during the march against police brutality city on Saturday shows the unmarked patrol car slowly cruising down the street Lynyrd Skynyrd’s ‘Sweet Home Alabama’ can be heard playing.

For years people have argued over whether the song, released in 1974, praises former segregationist Alabama Governor or not.

The band has long said it does not, but critics to this day maintain the song is racist.

Tension have been high in cities nationwide after two high profile cases in which grand juries declined to indict white police officers in the deaths of unarmed black men.

While the officers face an investigation after the video surfaced, some police supporters have argued that the officers might have played the song in support of the University of Alabama football team which was playing in the SEC championship game later that same day.
