PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) — The ride-sharing app Uber has launched in Portland without city approval.

Regional manager Brooke Stever says the app began working Friday at 5 p.m., and drivers were able to immediately begin offering rides.

Mayor Charlie Hales and City Commissioner Steve Novick say the launch was illegal. Under a city code that prohibits unlicensed taxis, Uber drivers face hefty fines if they are caught by code enforcement officers.

Uber offers car service in 250 cities in 50 countries.

that should be no problem . find the drivers , tow the car for no proof of taxi insurance and permits and what ever .then how about calling them for a ride and then bust the dumb one . so just shut them down before they start . keep all the cars that they use as taxi,s til all permits are in and up to date for that city and all the insurance that they need are in order .

Gotta love the politicians with uber-nazi power. If they can’t regulate it and tax it, it must be met with jackbooted thugs, even if it is a good thing for the citizens. No wonder I left Portland in the rear view mirror long ago. Can’t carry a handgun, can’t share a ride, can’t ride the Max after dark. You’re welcome to it.
