OCEAN SHORES — Police are investigating a bizarre death at an Ocean Shores motel where a guest allegedly cleared his room of art, threatened police and tried to set the room on fire before he was found dead inside.

According to the Ocean Shores Police Department, officers received a call around 8:30 a.m. from the manager at the Westerly Motel on Ocean Shores Boulevard. The manager told police a guest had taken all the pictures off the walls of his room and set them in the parking lot. The owner said the guest — a 66-year-old man from Freeland, Wash. — then drove away with all the art in a pile.

When police arrived on the scene, the guest, who had since returned to the motel, allegedly refused to answer the door. Police entered  his room with the owner of the motel and allegedly found the guest standing in the bathtub behind the shower curtain holding two 10-inch kitchen knives.

The guest allegedly lunged at a police officer, who pointed his Taser at the man and retreated. The officer went outside and called for backup.

While the officer and the hotel manager were waiting for backup from the Grays Harbor Sheriff’s Office and the Washington State Patrol, they tried to talk with the guest, police said. After no response, they noticed smoke and spotted flames coming from the man’s room. Officers a window and spotted the man lying on the floor.

Officers opened the door, pulled the unconscious man out, and administered CPR. The man was transported to Grays Harbor Community Hospital where he later died.

The Grays Harbor Corner’s Office will conduct an autopsy to determine the official cause of death. The full identity of the man has not yet been released.

Officers were able to put out the fire in the room, and little damage was caused to the motel.

Police are still investigating the incident.
