If you see a $100 bill on your windshield, you MAY want to think twice about getting out of your car

PRINCE GEORGE, Maryland-- Crooks on the East Coast have allegedly come up with an alluring ruse to scam people out of a car this holiday season.

Either that, or a scam that has never actually happened is getting more time to shine.

According to the Maryland Attorney General and ABC 7, crooks are using money to lure drivers out of running cars.

Carjackers will place a bill underneath the windshield wiper, ABC 7 says, and the driver only notices it once they are in their seat. The driver -- thinking a stranger has left a holiday gift -- steps out of the car to grab the bill. But in the seconds it takes for the driver to grab the $100, crooks will hop into the drivers seat and take off.

"We don't want to scare people, but we do want you to be careful," Maryland's Asst. Attorney General Karen Straughn told ABC 7.

People are more vulnerable around the holiday season, Straughn told ABC 7.

But the number of people who have been affected by this alleged scam remains unknown.

The website Snopes.com says despite the Maryland Attorney General's warning, there have been no documented cases of crooks actually performing the ruse.

"Quite possibly what's being reported is yet another instance of unknown persons leaving realists-looking fake money on cars as a prank or an advertising gimmick, with no intent to steal those vehicles," the Snopes.com author writes.
