Husband of slain Port Orchard woman hopes to shield kids from graphic details, photos

PORT ORCHARD, Wash. -- Paul Coplin, the estranged husband of Amber Lynn Coplin, is trying to shield their five boys from the graphic details of her murder.

“The people that matter the most, the friends and family, they don`t remember her like the rest of the world does -- and that`s all we care about, cause we know better,” Coplin said Thursday night.

Amber’s body was found inside her Port Orchard apartment last week. Her murder made national headlines after pictures of the crime scene turned up on a website. Investigators say they were posted by Amber's suspected killer before he was arrested.

Coplin says his kids, who range in age from 5 to 14, have not seen the pictures, but his oldest boys know they exist.

“I worry about in the future somebody trying to use what they have of those photos to hurt the children and that`s one of my biggest fears,” said Coplin.

The man suspected of killing Coplin, 33-year-old David Kalac, faces a charge of first-degree murder. According to court documents, Kalac and Coplin were dating and lived together.

Coplin says the kids split time between his house and Amber’s apartment.

“She was a good mom, she was a loving wife, and wonderful sister.  You name it, anything you can think, the good words are there,” said Coplin.

When Kalac makes his next court appearance Friday, Coplin doesn’t plan on being inside the courtroom. Coplin said he would rather spend that time with his kids.
