LEWIS COUNTY, Wash. — Deputies arrested a couple after a 3-year-old boy died last month from severe abuse.
According to the Lewis County Sheriff’s Office, a woman called 9-1-1 from her home in Vader on October 5th to report a boy was unconscious and not breathing. Medics transported the boy to Providence Centralia Hospital where he later died.
Investigators said the boy had obvious severe bruises and injuries to his body. They learned the boy’s mother had some relatives, Brenda and Danny Wing, both 26, taking care of him while she was in Vancouver.
Detectives interviewed the Wings and said they gave conflicting statements that were inconsistent with the investigation and autopsy findings.
“No child should be forced to endure the pain and agony that Jasper suffered,” prosecutor Jonathan Meyer said. “Although he can now rest, it is important that we hold those that are responsible accountable. As a result, Danny and Brenda Wing have been charged with Homicide by Abuse for their role in Jasper’s death.”
Lewis County Coroner Warren McLeod determined the cause of death was Chronic Battered Child Syndrome and the manner of death was homicide.
On Friday, deputies took the Wings into custody at the Child Protective Services Office in Centralia and later booked them into Lewis County Jail.
“Jasper was a victim of severe abuse, neglect, and betrayal from those responsible for the care, love, and guidance that every child deserves and is entitled to. The appalling manner in which he was treated and cared for ultimately caused his death. To think this poor little boy went through months of pain and suffering is heart wrenching. This case is a solemn reminder of the sickening and tragic consequences surrounding a life of drugs, alcohol, and abuse. We are working hard to ensure justice is served and those responsible for his death are held accountable”, said Sheriff Steve Mansfield.
Brenda and Danny Wing have three children of their own all under age six. The children are in protective custody.
