SEATTLE — Teachers and students at Garfield High School staged a walkout Thursday in protest of the district’s decision to terminate a yet-to-be-named core subject teacher.

The walkout was voted on by the Garfield High School Parent-Teacher-Student Administration (PTSA) and associated student government.

The elimination of a single core subject teacher, slated to take place in the ninth week of the school year, will affect around 150 student schedules, roughly 10 percent of the student body, the PTSA said.

Moreover, the cut in a teacher's position comes as Garfield has more students than projected for the year. Officials predicted Garfield would have 1,611 students enrolled in the 2014/15 school year, but currently have 1,622, the PTSA said.  All core classes are already filled to capacity, PTSA officials said.

Cutting a teacher this late into the school year may restrict students from graduating on time, the PTSA said, as well as cause anxiety for teachers and students.

"It is not yet known which core teacher will be cut and this has thrown the entire Garfield community into fear at a time when we should be focusing on how to best support all of our students," the PTSA said.
