Amber Alert canceled after 9-year-old boy found camping with dad at Hood River

VANCOUVER, Wash. -- An Amber Alert was canceled just before 5 a.m. Wednesday morning for 9-year-old boy out of Vancouver.

Authorities reported that the boy was found camping with his father at Hood River at about 3 a.m. Wednesday and that the boy was in good spirits.

The boy's father was in jail in Texas for domestic violence and his wife fled the area with the children while he was in jail.

She was in Vancouver, Wash., and her son was at school at Mill Plain Elementary School when his dad picked him up at about 2:45 p.m. Tuesday.

Police said the father was diagnosed a paranoid schizophrenic, and were worried about the safety of the boy.

But on Wednesday, a detective with Vancouver police told KPTV in Portland that the father  will not be facing any charges related to taking his son out of school.

According to police, the no contact order issued against the father only listed the child's mother, and not his son.

Investigators told KPTV the school also did everything right in this case.

School workers cross-referenced the man's photo identification with the boy's birth certificate on file. The child's mother had not informed administrators about the no contact order between herself and her estranged husband, police said.

"Despite not being on the approved pick-up list, the biological father - given proper ID and documentation - has the right to pick the student up from school," a school district statement said, according to KPTV.
