Schools briefly ordered to 'shelter in place' after shots fired in West Seattle neighborhood

WEST SEATTLE -- Police took a man into custody after a SWAT standoff in the 2100 block of Arch Way Southwest.

According to Seattle police, a man started firing shots into the air Thursday afternoon . Nobody was hurt, but there was 'significant' damage to cars in the area.

Officers recovered a handgun and a rifle from the suspect. Medics treated him at the scene for minor injuries to his face and then transported him to the hospital for a mental evaluation.

Students and staff at four West Seattle schools were under a "shelter in place" order around 3:00 p.m.

School officials lifted that order shortly after 4:00 p.m.



The schools affected included Lafayette, West Seattle High, Madison and Schmitz Park. Alki was also notified of the police activity.
