Are 'Tom and Jerry' cartoons racist? Amazon adds disclaimer before viewing

Amazon Prime Instant Video and iTunes have added episodes “Tom and Jerry” cartoons to their instant watch collections.

Amazon has placed a racial disclaimer before episodes.

The company says the 75-year-old cartoon must carry a warning that episodes contain some ethnic and racial prejudices that were once commonplace in American society, according to dailymail.com.

The focus of the warning is the black maid portrayed in the cartoons known as Mammy Two Shoes. Only the lower half of the character was ever shown on the screen. Some say Mammy Two Shoes is nothing more than a crude racial stereotype. Amazon says the depictions were wrong then and are wrong today.

Some customers are applauding Amazon’s stance, while others are calling it nothing more than an ‘PC madness.’
