Violent night in Tacoma: Man shot in chest in drive-by; woman's Jeep carjacked at gunpoint

TACOMA -- A man was shot in the chest by gunmen driving by in a maroon-colored SUV Thursday night, police said.

The victim's condition was not immediately known, police spokeswoman Loretta Cool said.

The drive-by shooting occurred just before 10 p.m. in the  3600 block of East L Street.

The victim claimed he didn’t recognize the men in the SUV, Cool said.

The suspects drove off southbound and they have not been located, Cool said.

Earlier, across town in the 2300 block of Yakima Court, two armed men confronted a woman at about 9:45 p.m. and carjacked her red Jeep Liberty, which has Georgia plates, Cool said. The victim was not injured.

The two suspects were described as black males in their late teens or early 20s.

Cool said officers don't believe the carjacking is related to the drive-by shooting.  It’s across town and there were different suspect descriptions.
