100s of pounds of lettuce, onions litter I-5 following produce truck crash

MOUNT VERNON - It was NOT a pretty sight. Hundreds of pounds of apples, onions, green peppers lay scatted alongside of Interstate 5 in Mount Vernon early Friday morning.

The Washington State Patrol (WSP) reported that a semi-truck travelling northbound I-5 rear-ended a slow moving box truck near the College Way on ramp around 1:40 a.m.

WSP said that the box truck was only going about 20 miles per hour, due to a transmission problem. The driver of the semi didn't realize that the truck was moving so slowly, and the rear-ended the back of the box truck, spilling the produce alongside the freeway, a WSP trooper told Q13 Fox News.

The collision caused the box truck to roll over and the semi to slide down an embankment, ending on its wheels in the College Way on ramp to northbound I-5.

WSP said that despite the significant damage to both trucks, neither driver was seriously hurt.

The accident did not block any lanes of the interstate and WSP continues to investigate the collision.
