Thieves steal thousands in jewelry from Salvation Army

SHORELINE -- Thieves broke into a new Salvation Army store that was days away from opening -- stealing 10,000 dollars worth of jewelry.

Store employees worked Sunday afternoon and sometime during the night the thieves pried off the lock on a door and went straight for the jewelry.

Captain Timothy Rockey with the Salvation Army says it was heartbreaking to find the jewelry missing.

"It was really devastating to our staff and to our volunteers because we need the product to fund our program and our customers are interested and excited about getting some product as well," Capt. Rockey said.

The revenue generated from the store goes towards the Salvation Army's Adult Rehabilitation program.  It's a program that helps adults who are struggling with drugs and alcohol.

"It takes virtually 2000 a month to support one of those beds, so taking all the jewelry out of the cases here ends up costing us five months of one person or five people one month that we have to find that money somewhere else," Capt. Rockey said.

Unfortunately, the store was just days away from installing a security system.

Despite the setback, the store is opening on time. The grand opening is set for Thursday, September 25th.
