Deputies investigating dead dogs, bloody mattress found in Kitsap County

PORT GAMBLE -- Police are investigating the scene where two dead German shepherd dogs were found wrapped in a blue tarp underneath a bloody mattress Sunday near the entrance to a popular trailhead in Kitsap County.

According to the Kitsap County Sheriff's Office, two dead dogs were found Saturday near the Stottlemeyere Trailhead in Port Gamble. The dogs -- one a 6- to 8-year-old female and the other a 3- to 4-year-old neutered male -- were found wrapped in a blue tarp and underneath a bloody mattress.

Kitsap County Sheriff's Office Spokesman Scott Wilson said a cursory exam of the dogs did not find any obvious cause of death such as gunshots or stabbing. However, he said it appeared the female dog had been used for breeding.

Police were not sure if the blood on the mattress came from a human or an animal, and are investigating, Wilson said.

The dogs were not micro-chipped.

Animal control will lead the investigation on the dead dogs, Wilson said. Police continue to investigate, he said, and there are no leads on the case.
