Major League Soccer unveils new logo, reaction mixed

NEW YORK CITY -- Since Major League Soccer was founded in 1996, the logo has been more or less the same - a foot kicking a ball inside of a rectangle.  Thursday morning, the league showed fans a new brand identity, but not all fans are supportive of the move.

The new logo is split into two halves, to represent the two halves of a soccer game.  The stars symbolize Club, Country, and Community. The border represents the field of play, and the slash represents the game's "speed and energy."

Additionally, each team will have their own variation of the crest for use on uniforms.

Notably missing in the new logo: an actual soccer ball.  On the MLS Web site, the league said that including it was "unnecessary as it dates us very quickly (due to the fast pace of innovation in our game)".

After word spread of the logo, fans took to Twitter to sound off.

The reveal event also acted as a launch for the video game FIFA '15, which will feature MLS teams.
