2 seriously injured in sailboat explosion on Blake Island

KITSAP COUNTY -- Two people are recovering from severe burns after a sailboat they were in exploded Sunday at a marina on Blake Island, Kitsap County sheriff's deputies said.

Sheriff's deputies received calls around 4:47 p.m. that a sailboat moored at a public marina in a state park on the north side of Blake Island exploded.

Deputies stationed in Kitsap County took a boat from the Port Orchard Marina with six firefighters and medics to Blake Island following the call, since no permanent deputies are stationed on the island.

They found one male with second degree burns and a female with first degree burns injured in the explosion. The two were treated and transferred to a Seattle area hospital, the King County sheriff's office said.

It is not immediately known what caused the explosion. Sheriff's deputies are investigating the incident.
