Iconic Magic Mountain rollercoaster catches fire (PHOTOS)

VALENCIA, Calif --  An iconic rollercoaster at Six Flags Magic Mountain near Los Angeles caught fire Monday afternoon according to KTLA-TV.

The Los Angeles County Fire Department was called to the scene at the amusement park just after 1:30 p.m., fire Inspector Scott Miller said.

Photos tweeted from the scene showed a column of smoke rising from one of the highest points of the Colossus rollercoaster.

Video from KTLA’s helicopter showed sections of the track on the wooden track coaster were charred and black and part of it had collapsed.

The wooden coaster ceased operating in August after 36 years in operation. It was set to be replaced by a hybrid ride called “Twisted Colossus.”

The popular ride dropped 100 feet and reached speeds of up to 60 mph.

Contractors had been working on disassembling the ride, when the “top of the lift hill” caught fire, the amusement park said on Twitter.

The fire was put out, the park said by 2:12 p.m.

“There are no injuries and the fire is contained,” Six Flags stated. “Colossus is currently undergoing a transformation and has been closed since August 17.”
