Driver killed when SUV hit by Amtrak train in Vancouver

Amtrak Reports Record Ridership In Month Of MarchVANCOUVER, Wash (KPTV) -- A driver was killed when his SUV was hit by an Amtrak train in Vancouver on Sunday.

The collision happened at a private crossing on the 12200 block of SE Evergreen Highway, near the Interstate 205 overpass, at 11 a.m.

Investigators said there are no railroad signals at the location, but there are stop signs indicating it's a train crossing.

Amtrak said the train originally departed Chicago and was heading to Portland from Spokane with 107 passengers on board. There were no injuries to the passengers or crew.

The driver of the SUV has not yet been identified.

A BNSF Railway Co. spokesman said upward of 40 trains use that track on a daily basis heading east from Portland.

The train that was involved in the collision, along with four others, were delayed two hours for the investigation.

Details about what led to the crash have not yet been released.
