60-year-old hit, killed by car while crossing road in Bellingham; driver arrested

BELLINGHAM -- A car hit and killed a 60-year-old man who was crossing a street Friday  night in Bellingham.

Police said they arrested the driver and booked him into Whatcom County Jail. He could face charges of vehicular homicide and driving with a suspended license.

The victim, who uses a walker, was crossing Alabama Street near Racine Street to get to a bus stop around 7:00 p.m. when he was hit by a Volkswagen Jetta, police said.

First responders said the victim was seriously hurt when they arrived. He died at the scene.

Another woman was crossing in front of the man and was unharmed.

Bellingham police said the driver was cooperating with officers. They believe alcohol was a factor.

According to police, the driver said he was having trouble seeing because the sun was low on the horizon and shining directly in his eyes.

The victim's identity has not yet been released.
