SEATTLE —  U.S. Attorney Jenny Durkan has resigned from her position for the Western District of Washington, Attorney General Eric Holder announced in Washington, D.C., Wednesday.

“As United States Attorney for Western Washington, Jenny has served as a tireless advocate for the American people, for the citizens of Washington state, and for the cause of justice,” Holder said.

Durkan has served as U.S. Attorney for the last five years.  She was one of a first round of appointments made by President Barack Obama in his first term in office. She has informed Obama, Holder and U.S. Sens. Patty Murray, D-Wash., and Maria Cantwell, D-Wash., of her decision, she said.

“I have been honored to serve the communities in Western Washington, to lead an office of extraordinary people and public servants, and to work with dedicated federal, state and local and tribal law enforcement,” Durkan said.

In an interview later Wednesday on Q13 FOX News, Durkan said she wants to spend time with her family and take time to decide what she wants to do next in her life. Watch the

Durkan served for two years on Holder’s original Attorney General Advisory Committee, and has chaired his advisory Subcommittee on Cybercrime and Intellectual Property Enforcement since 2009.

“Over the years, she has demonstrated remarkable skill in guiding complex litigation, fostering interagency coordination, and combating a wide range of criminal activities,” said Holder.  “Jenny has been an exceptional leader in the Justice Department’s fight against cyber-crime and our work to protect the civil rights of all Americans.  And with a strong focus on education, prevention, treatment, and community outreach, she launched one of the first federal drug courts.”

A replacement for Durkan has not yet been announced.
