Police: Man waving gun on I-84 shot by officer; interstate closed for hours

PORTLAND -- A man who was waving a gun and threatening drivers on Interstate 84 was shot by an officer Monday morning, according to Portland police, FOX 12 (KPTV) reported.

Police asked people to shelter in place starting at around 10 a.m. Monday on the 11200 block of Northeast Fremont Street. Officers said the suspect, who has not been identified, was threatening people with a gun on I-84.

Officers said he refused to comply with their commands and stated he wanted police to shoot him. The suspect was shot by an officer near the highway, police said. He was taken to the hospital with injuries described as non-life threatening.

A handgun was found near the suspect.

The Oregon Department of Transportation shut down I-84 in both directions in the area of 122nd Avenue for the police activity. I-84 was closed between 181st Avenue and Interstate 205 until 2 p.m. Monday.
