Holiday ferry trouble? Popular route resumes service after delay

EDMONDS -- The Edmonds/Kingston ferry route was out of service for much of Monday morning, putting a cramp in some Labor Day travel plans.

According to the Washington State Department of Transportation Ferry website, the ferry was not in service due to operational constraints for most of the morning. Service was restored around 10 a.m. but only for one boat. Full two-boat service was slated to return at 12:50 p.m., with limited one-boat service continuing until then.

"Until the Walla Walla goes back into service, the limited one-boat service on the Spokane will continue with Kingston departures at 11:55 am and Edmonds departures at 11:10am and 12:40pm," WSDOT officials said.

Officials still encouraged alternative routes, with the WSDOT recommending the Seattle/Bainbridge or Seattle/Bremerton ferry routes instead.

Other ferry routes were seeing delays Monday as high traffic crowded the ships. The Anacortes to Sidney Ferry and Port Townsend to Coupeville ferry routes required reservations, with about two hours of wait time each.

The Seattle to Bremerton ferry route was also seeing heavy traffic.

The ferry Tokitae was taken out of service Sunday morning so crews can make “necessary repairs to the vessel,” according to WSDOT, causing some delays.
