KENT — A 13-year-old girl was killed and three others injured, including an infant, while trying to cross a busy road in Kent.

The family was attempting to cross Pacific Highway South near Kent Des Moines Road.

Police said the family crossed the northbound lanes and onto the median.  Two lanes of southbound traffic stopped to let the family cross but the far right lane didn’t see them. A full size ford pickup truck struck the family.

The 13-year-old girl died at the scene. Three others were transported with non-life threatening injuries.

Witnesses at the scene tell Q13 FOX News that there was debris thrown across the roadway including baby toys and a stroller.

Authorities said this tragedy could have been avoided -- a crosswalk is just down the street from where they attempted to cross.

The driver of the truck was taken into police custody but has not yet been charged.

There are jaywalking in that area all the time. The adults should be charged but unfortunately it will be the driver’s fault

I live near this area and I am so tired of seeing people cross the road when there is a crosswalk 10′ away, it has gotten ridiculous all up and down PAC Hwy. I have almost hit people several times. There is very few times that you go out and don’t see people standing in the median, where are the police and why aren’t the ticketing these people? And what’s worse is these people act like they have the right of way and don’t even try to hurry to get out of the way. I’m so sorry for the children of these reckless adults, what a needless tragedy.

The crosswalk is angled funny about a half block from the place EVERYONE crosses. The light changes when u are in the middle, then u walk half block from the stores and to the bus stops.

WHY DID CARS STOP TO LET THE FAMILY CROSS A BUSY HIGHWAY??!! THOSE WHO STOPPED SHOULD HAVE SOME LIABILITY FOR CAUSING THIS ACCIDENT AS WELL AS THE PARENTS WHO DECIDED THEIRS KIDS LIFE WASNT WORTH WALKING TO THE CROSSWALK!! Why aren’t police giving tickets to jaywalkers anymore?? The driver of the truck IS NOT AT FAULT
