Millions hit the road for Labor Day; Seattle top destination

SEATTLE -- 34.7 million people are expected to travel for the last unofficial weekend of the summer and experts say Seattle is one of the top destinations this year.

Based on hotel bookings, Seattle ranks on the top of the list of Labor Day destinations. As a result, the average hotel room in Seattle is priced at over $300 per night.

Gas prices are down this year and that could attract the most travelers on Labor Day weekend in six years.

The average price for a gallon of gas in Washington state is $3.88. The nationwide average is 3.41. That is 18 cents cheaper than this time last year.

WSDOT expects a lot of cars on the road. The Department of Transportation is scaling back on a number of construction projects on Friday to help ease congestion.

Everyone living in the region is advised to check on traffic conditions before they leave their home. WSDOT expects long lines at ferry terminals this weekend. Boat sailings heading west will likely be full on Friday and sailing on Sunday and Monday headed east will be jammed.

This weekend also marks the end of the 'Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over' campaign. WSP and other area law enforcement agencies will have more officers on the road looking for DUI drivers.
