Police investigating couple who tried to enter maternity ward with lifelike dolls

LOS ANGELES -- Police are investigating a Merced, Calif., couple who tried to gain access into hospital's maternity ward while carrying two lifelike baby dolls, the Los Angeles Times reported Friday.

The couple tried to bypass security at Merced Medical Center's maternity ward last weekend with the two dolls wrapped in blankets, officials told the Times.

Merced police Capt. Tom Trindad told the newspaper that detectives are looking into the couple's motives, including whether to they were trying to abduct a baby.

Trindad said the couple could face a misdemeanor trespassing charge.
