Police looking for armed robbers who dragged officer, shot guns on highway

FIFE -- Police are looking for suspected armed robbers who allegedly dragged a cop alongside a car during a getaway attempt, just before firing at pursuing police on the highway.

According to the Fife Police Department's Commander Dave Wood, police were called to an armed robbery of a person around 1 a.m. Monday at Love's Truck Stop in the 1500 block of 33rd Avenue East.

When officers arrived on scene, they approached a female driver and a male passenger in a car, believing them to be the suspects. A struggle ensued, police said, and the car was put into reverse and took off. One officer was dragged a short distance and he fired on the vehicle, striking it. The officer dropped free and the vehicle sped off.

The officer was taken to the hospital with minor scrapes and scratches, and they were expected to be released.

Police chased after the car on southbound Interstate 5, as the suspects fired back at pursuing vehicles, officers said. The pursuit continued into Tacoma where officers lost sight of the vehicle.

Police later spotted the vehicle unoccupied in a Spanaway. The vehicle was hit by gunfire from the police, and appeared the people may have sustained injuries.

Police are still looking for the suspects. Surveillance photographs from the business show several occupants associated with the vehicle prior to police contact.  If you know anyone about these individuals, you are encouraged to call Crime Stoppers at 253-591-5959.
