SCAM WARNING: Crooks posing as sheriff's deputies say you've missed jury duty

PORT ANGELES - Be careful if you get a call from someone claiming to be from the Clallam County Sheriff because it could be a scam.

The sheriff's office is warning residents that someone is calling people, identifying themselves as a Clallam County sheriff's deputy.

A citizen reported getting a call from someone claiming to be a deputy", saying that the citizen had failed to report for jury duty, and would have to pay a fine, the sheriff's office said. The victim became suspicious when the deputy attempted to obtain the citizen's home address and other personal information.

Fortunately, the citizen refused to give out any personal information and hung up on the fake deputy. The citizen then called the sheriff's office to verity whether the call was legitimate or not, the sheriff's office said.

The phone call was an attempt to gather personal information, in order to steal money or obtain sufficient information for identity theft.

As a matter of policy, the Sheriff's Office does not call citizens asking for personal information over the phone.

Anyone receiving a similar type of phone call should hang up immediately.
