George Harrison Memorial Tree killed ... by beetles

LOS ANGELES -- A fitting end?

A George Harrison Memorial Tree planted near Griffith Park in Los Angeles in 2004 was about 10 feet tall this year, before it was overcome by a tree beetle "onslaught," the Los Angeles Times reported.

A plaque at the base of the tree was meant to commemorate the former Beatle who died in 2001. Harrison spent his final days in Los Angeles, where he was an avid gardener.

The tree is expected to be replanted soon.

Harrison would have likely enjoyed the end to the tree, as he was said to love irony. He once said his biggest break in life was getting into the Beatles; his second biggest was getting out.
