SEATTLE -- Homicide detectives are investigating what they called the "grizzly discovery" of a body with severe head wounds found lying in the Duwamish waterway Saturday.

According to police, a man on an early morning walk called police around 6:30 a.m. after spotting the body in the area of 8th Avenue South and South Portland Street.

Homicide and crime scene investigators were called to the scene to search for clues, as detectives believe the victim was assaulted somewhere else and brought to the waterway, police said.

Witnesses in the area reported seeing a suspicious car in the neighborhood after midnight, police said, but could not elaborate on the make or model of the vehicle.

The sex or identity of the victim was not released.

Anyone with information on the body or anything suspicious in the area is asked to call the Seattle Police Homicide Office at 206-684-5550.
