KINGSTON -- Three people escaped a sinking helicopter that crashed landed in shallow water off the coast of Kingston.

According to North Kitsap Fire and Rescue, a landing attempt went wrong around 3:30 p.m. Saturday. The helicopter came to rest upside down in about 6-feet of water just in front of some homes.

Witnesses jumped into action and helped all three people get out of the overturned aircraft just before firefighters arrived.

Officials say two people were not hurt. One woman was taken to the hospital with minor injuries.

Firefighters say only a small amount of aviation fuel leaked from the helicopter. Crews used absorbent material around the source to contain the leak.
