Ferndale man accused of 3 rapes taken into custody at U.S./Canada border



FERNDALE, Wash. -- A 21-year-old man suspected of three rapes, including two against minors, and who left the Ferndale area before police could arrest him in October 2012 was detained trying to enter the United States at the Blaine border crossing on July 4 and is booked into jail for investigation of the felony charges, the Ferndale Police Department said Tuesday.

The suspect was booked on two counts of third-degree rape, one count of second-degree rape, and one count of first-degree rape of a child.

"The charges involved three different victims, all of whom were known" to the suspect,  police said in a statement.

The Ferndale Police Department said details of the specific charges are as follows:

Rape in the third degree -- In 2010 and 2011, the suspect had sexual intercourse with a female who was under the age of 14.  He was less than 36 months older than the victim.

Rape of a child in the first degree -- In 2005, the suspect had sexual contact with a 9-year-old female victim. He was more than 24 months older than the victim.

Rape in the second degree -- During the summer of 2011, the suspect had sexual intercourse with a female victim who was intoxicated, passed out and was not able to consent to sexual intercourse. The victim was 18 at the time.
