SNOQUALMIE PASS -- A helicopter team rescued a stranded climber form a cliff above Melakwa Lake on Monday.

Ground rescue teams told the climber it would be several hours before they could get to him, but the climber was worried he would not be able to hang on that long.

The King County Sheriff's Office called the Snohomish County Helicopter Rescue Team for assistance.

Crews spotted the climber at an elevation of 5,000 feet on the west side of Chair Peak. The helicopter team landed at the nearby Alpental ski area parking lot to offload some gear before flying back to attempt the rescue.

The helicopter lowered a rescuer down, fastened a harness around the climber and hoised him to safety around 8:30 p.m.
