Play structure significantly damaged in early morning fires

A fire burned a play structure early Thursday morning.

SEATTLE -- A fire at a local playground caused around $50,000 in damage early Thursday morning, fire officials said.

Firefighters were called to reports of a fire coming out of the back of Schmitz Park Elementary school in the 5000 block of SW Spokane Street at 1:19 a.m. Thursday, officials said. The Seattle Fire Department found flames coming from the playground area, and quickly put out the fire, which seemed relegated to wood chips.

The play structure was significantly damaged before the flames were put out. The heat and flames melted the metal and plastic playground equipment.

Fire investigators are looking into what caused the blaze.
