FORT IRWIN, California -- A soldier was killed Saturday during a training exercise at the National Training Center in Fort Irwin, California, according to Joint Base Lewis-McChord.

Officials identified the soldier as 23-year-old Pfc. Andrew J. Sass of Fremont, North Carolina.

“ a true loss to the Lancer team. He was a husband, warrior, and true friend to all. He will be missed, but we will not forget him,” said Col. Louis A. Zeisman, commander of the 2-2 SBCT.

Pfc. Sass was a 2-2 Stryker Brigade Combat Team, 7th Infantry Division Soldier. The team was sent to the National Training Center earlier in June for a month-long training exercise.

Military officials say the incident is currently under investigation.

Sass entered the military in May of 2013 and attended training in Fort Benning, Georgia. He arrived at JBLM in October of 2013.

He earned the National Defense Service Medal, the Global War on Terrorism Service Medal and an Army Service Ribbon.
