One dead, two more hurt in explosion at fireworks company

TENINO -- An explosion at a fireworks company killed one person and injured two others Wednesday morning, Thurston County sheriff's deputies said.

Deputies are investigating an explosion at Entertainment Fireworks, Inc. on Reeder Road in Tenino.

A 74-year-old man was killed in the explosion, Thurston County Fire Department said. A 25-year-old male was airlifted to Harborview Medical Center with serious injures, and a 53-year-old man was taken to a local hospital.

The plant is the largest fireworks company in the state. It was not immediately clear whether or not the company manufactured fireworks, or specialized in training and storage of pyrotechnics.

Mike Nelson, a a witness who lives near company, said he heard a loud blast.

"I was sleeping and I heard the whole thing," Nelson said.

Thurston County sheriff's deputies said there was no indication of criminal activity at the explosion. Regulatory investigators were headed to the company to investigate.
