Gunman kills 14-year-old at Oregon high school; shooter also dead

14-year-old Emilio Hoffman was killed at Reynolds High School in Troutdale, Ore., Tuesday

TROUTDALE, Ore. -- Police identified the victim in Tuesday’s shooting at Reynolds High School as 14-year-old Emilio Hoffman, a freshman soccer player. Investigators believe the shooter, a student, entered the gymnasium and shot Hoffman in the boys locker room.

Police say they have tentatively identified the shooter but would not release his name or age or how he died at a news conference Tuesday night.

Police said Emilio's body was found in the boys locker room, while the shooter's body was found in a different restroom.

The shooting happened just after 8 a.m.

Police say the shooter carried a rifle and also fired at a PE teacher who was grazed in the hip area but not seriously injured.

One student said he saw the shooter running down the hallway.

“There were two shots after we were all meeting in the gym and I saw someone run by us as we were running to our weight room. He had no mask on. I could just see the side of his face. He was carrying a gun and running after our PE teacher who ended up getting shot,” said Taylor Blaylock.

As students filed out of the school with their hands up, police patted them down and searched their backpacks. Police say they found a gun in one student’s backpack but that it was unrelated to the shooting Tuesday morning. That teen is in custody.

Students then filed onto buses where they were taken to a nearby Fred Meyer to be reunited with their parents.

“It’s all so senseless and so horrible that something like this can happen. The kids were just there to go to school and the fact someone would do something like this, you can’t even describe it,” said mother Denise Blaylock.

There was a 9 p.m. vigil planned at Morey Middle School in Troutdale. District officials say school at Reynolds High is canceled until further notice.
