MONROE, Wash. -- At least nine people were injured, six critically, in a five-car crash on State Route 2 in Monroe Monday night, the Washington State Patrol said.

The crash closed down the arterial highway for hours.

A State Patrol trooper said a car intending to take a left turn had to stop for oncoming traffic. The car behind the first vehicle stopped, but the third car swerved to avoid rear-ending the car in front of them, side-swiped the second car and hit the oncoming car head-on.

Another car behind the line of cars flipped and rolled.
