Toyota recalls millions of Prius hybrids

Toyota is recalling 1.9 million of its popular Prius hybrids worldwide.

The car maker says there's a software glitch with its engine control unit.

The software problem causes a glitchy boost converter, which can lead to overheating that can, in turn, damage or deform transistors, Toyota said.

This can lead to the car entering a failsafe mode, where it can still be driven while at reduced power. In limited cases, the hybrid system could shut down and cause the vehicle to stop.

So far, no accidents or injuries have been reported related to the problem.

The affected vehicles were manufactured between March 2009 and February 2014.

Some 713 cars in North America are under the recall.
